Welcome to the Prairie House Studio Blog!

Hi Friends,

I was out in the prairie late this afternoon, collecting seeds to spread on some bare ground. I usually walk the path slowly and drink in how the prairie has changed in the last week. I found that to see the various plants whose seeds are ready to harvest, I had to slow down even further. I needed to focus on individual plants among thousands. Another sense of being present to the now.

One of the things I hope to do with this blog is a running commentary on the life of the prairie. Eventually, when Pam is retired, I think we'll put up a second blog about our gardening.

I also intend to talk about sculpture and art in general. There is a group of us who get together and do our various art forms. The conversations really get deep into art, philosophy, and the universality of different forms of art. We call it the Artisan Energy Exchange. Any wisdom I glean from the group I'll attempt to capture and put up. There is also a Virginia element that gathers; those times are called a Swim. Same reporting will apply. I hope to put up experiences, events, thoughts, and old people wisdom. We'll see how this goes.

It’s been wonderful to work with Emily at St Brigid Press, who designed my website. Didn’t she do a wonderful job?! Email your applause. Spread the word to your friends.

In the meantime, the goldenrod is just so sunshine bright. Seems like easily a third to half of the field is goldenrod yellow. A few weeks ago, just about the same portion was all lavender — Bee balm, Bergamot. The prairie grasses are putting their seed heads out. A Big Bluestem plant is the tallest of them (about 8'), but an Indian grass isn't far behind. Seeds are not ready yet from these two. The Side Oats Gamma is the only hot weather grass with seeds ready to harvest.
